The annual Hockinson Fun Days went off without a hitch the weekend of May 30-31, with thousands of people flocking to the intersection of Northeast 182nd Avenue and Northeast 159th Street for a parade, a 5-kilometer fun run, country fair, bazaar and carnival. An all-you-can-eat menu of pancakes, ham and scrambled eggs attracted approximately 2,000 diners to Fire District 3's 20th annual pancake breakfast.
The money raised will go toward scholarships for local students and help pay for a baseball scoreboard at Hockinson High School.
Seventy-seven runners lined up at the high school track for the 5K run and kids' mile. The sound of music rang through the air near the finish line, thanks to the unique winners' medals made out of cowbells.
"Cows are sort of our theme," said race organizer Laurie Porter, "since we're out here in the country."
Mario Beaudoin, 34, from Yacolt, was the men's race winner and Madeline Sellers, 49, from Washougal, was the top female.
Next up was the parade, which kicked off around 12:30 p.m. with between 65 and 70 entries ranging from car clubs to bands, Scout troops and "lots of horses," said organizer Lynne Van Buskirk.
Ian Strome, 8, was chosen as the grand marshal in honor of him being a bone marrow donor for his 2-year-old brother Joshua, who has aplastic anemia.
"The parade was perfect," Van Buskirk said.
Other events throughout the day included a cake walk where 200 cakes were up for grabs, a dunk tank and live music from Washougal band Hot Audio.
